In my quest for ways to make my house smell less like 5 animals and a soccer player (thats the hubby); I went in search of a natural air freshener. I am getting sick of Febreze and feeling ready for a change. I stumbled upon this recipe over and over and I see why…it just so happened to be the BEST air freshener I have ever tired! And incidentally it has become my favorite solution to combat the dry winter air coupled with the gas heat running in my home.
I am not sure who to give the credit to for this wonderfully simple concoction since I have seen the recipe so many places; but I thank them a million times over 🙂
In a small pot (one you don’t mind leaving on low for a few hours) combine:
- 1-2 sprigs of Rosemary
- 1 Lemon sliced
- 1-2 tsp of Vanilla Extract but to be honest I used 1 tbs or more 🙂 I really like vanilla
- 2 cups of water
- Bring to gentle boil and then reduce to a low simmer and leave
I continue to add water to mine throughout the day because it not only smells amazing but adds moisture to the air in the house. I have used one mixture for several days without the smell really diluting. Sometimes on the second day or so I will add a touch more vanilla but the lemons and rosemary last a while.
When it’s on its last legs I put it down the garbage disposal to make the sink smell fresh and just start again.
On another note but still related below is a home freshening tip I tried that didn’t work 😦
I was BEYOND excited to try this when I first saw it on Pinterest because I am OBSESSED with coffee! All of the sites I looked at had pictures similar to mine above saying that if you put a tea light or french vanilla tea light in some coffee beans it will smell like coffee or french vanilla coffee due to the warmth of the candle warming the beans….NOT TRUE!!
I tried regular tea lights and scented ones and I didn’t smell the coffee beans at all. I even tried putting the whole thing on a candle warmer and in the microwave (without the candle) and zero smell from the beans. So I am calling this a FAIL but it’s a beautiful fail since it’s still nice to look at.
